What to do on the hottest February day on record in England? Get outdoors and have a shoot of course. So I arranged a shoot with the lovely Natalia Gates consisting of studio, lifestyle and outdoor woodland location sets.
The studio sets consisted of single light setups. A reflector was incorporated for some of the shots. I also made use of a smoke machine in some of the images to shake up the background a little. The benefit of using a smoke machine is that no two images ever have the same ‘background’.
Natalie bought a few outfits along with her for the portraiture work. Below are a few basic edited images as a sneak peak. Basic editing means I’ve simply adjusted levels and basic blemish removal. All work performed in Lightroom. No filters or colour manipulation has been done to the images shown on this blog post.
Natalia had an idea for a lifestyle set wearing a gown and a towel. We made use of the parts of my house which currently are not covered in boxes! (my house sorting is nearing the closing stages, finally!!). I received a new to me, Nikon 24mm – 120mm F4 VR lens whilst we were shooting the studio sets, so promptly replaced my 50mm prime lens to try it out. I’m pretty impressed with the initial results.
We then headed out to a local park to make the most of the glorious February sunshine and sweltering 17 degrees outdoors. Natalia braved the paths in some rather impressive platforms. There were a few near ankle breaking moments but happy to report she survived the field trip unscathed.
All in all a very productive day and excellent first shoot with Natalia. And first impressions of the 24 – 120mm lens is, “why have I waited this long to get one?”.
