Grumpy Git's Road Trip: Travelling commercial photographer & IT guy
A realistic journey into the life of a digital nomad.
Hello howsit! I'm Elton, also known as "The Grumpy Git", and your new go-to guy for all things vanlife related.
But don’t let the name put you off!
While some might argue that my biggest claim to fame is being everyone’s favourite grump, I can assure you that my real areas of expertise involve the following skills:
If self-deprecating humour is your thing, you’ve come to the right place. As I make my way across the globe, I will be documenting all of the trials and tribulations I endure while transitioning to the life of a digital nomad.
Thinking about taking the leap yourself—leaving behind the safety of a career for a less restricted but more fulfilling life?
My goal is to both entertain and inform, so you can expect plenty of guidance and advice in addition to the photos and videos I’ll be posting of my travels.
Ever considered giving up your 9 to 5 for a life less rigid?
For most of my life, I have had this need and desire to travel and see as much of the world as I can. However, I followed the more secure (at the time) route of pursuing a career in IT.
For at least the past 10 years now, that wanderlust has become increasingly present.
So after a 30-year career, at the tender age of 48, I'm making a lifelong desire a reality and I'd love for you to join me!
I hope that my open and authentic account of my journey will provide the inspiration or clarity you need to make the decision whether the life of a digital nomad or vanlifer is something you could do.
I have very little DIY skills, know how to put petrol in a car, check and top up on oil, put air in the tyres and how to fill the radiator and wiper fluid. That's pretty much it. You will be learning (or laughing) with me every step of the way.

Are you interested in the Digital Nomad lifestyle?
Has the COVID pandemic and working from home made you realise that you could do your job from anywhere in the world?
Or perhaps you're a small business owner, like me, that provides your services completely remotely?
If you're considering the world of a digital nomad then I hope my adventures will cast some reality on what it is like to live this often glamorised lifestyle if Instagram is anything to go by.
You will be seeing this all unfold. My journey from a homeowner into a nomadic lifestyle. The highs and lows. In true Grumpy Git authenticity.
Or perhaps you want to go even further and become a vanlifer?
I'm going to be a hybrid of a digital nomad and a vanlifer.
My initial plans include 30 counties in the UK & Europe which I plan to do mostly in a van.
However there are many more countries that I'd like to visit and some of these may require hostels, hotels, AirBnbs etc.
I'll be documenting my journey from selling my house to deciding on a van and all the questions and solutions I have along the way.

Restaurants and cafes. I'm particularly interested in the local cuisine of the countries I visit.
Unique and quirky shops and places of interest
Campsites, especially those that offer campervan sites.
Companies aligned with my values that would be interested in sponsorship.
Local guides, especially useful if you speak English (the only other language I speak which may get me by in The Netherlands)
Suggestions from YOU of places I should visit.
You are a charity that can benefit from photography or online presence assistance. Special interest in Mental Health, Homelessness and Children Service charities.

If you do follow the journey, please do get involved, perhaps we could even meet for a coffee or something less civilised when I'm in your part of the world.
